Lapa Rios is Wilderness Adventure in a Class by Itself. This owner-operated wilderness preserve in Costa Rica offers accommodations for a limited few with upscale and personalized service in an unforgettable Pacific jungle setting. Located in the Osa Peninsula where the Golfo Dulce meets the Pacific Ocean, Lapa Rios is close to the famous Corcovado National Park. The beaches are isolated and pristine. The 1,000 acre private reserve offers miles of uncrowded trails wild with spectacular jungle waterfalls.
Fourteen large, very private ocean view luxury bungalows, each with two queen size beds and its own garden and patio. Indoor solar-heated shower with private garden shower and a large private deck overlooking the rainforest and the ocean. Romantic swimming pool.
There is abundant wildlife, even near the rooms, and the private reserve offers excellent opportunities to see thousands of species of trees, plants, birds (over 300 bird species identified), insects and mammals in Central America's largest remaining tropical lowland forest.
Numerous local tours and activities are available, including Corcovado National Park, hiking deep into the rainforest, sea kayaking, horseback riding, a private tropical plant and orchid garden, deep-sea, in-shore and on-shore fishing, mangrove river, gulf boat ride and massage.
Although remote and isolated (no phones), Lapa Rios serves food and beverages not usually offered in the wilderness. Meals rotate daily, focusing on fresh fruits, vegetables, local fish, chicken and meat. A full service bar offers your favorite beverages, including fresh juices, wines and spirits.
Lapa Rios is a model of the use of ecotourism to assist land preservation while serving and teaching a remote community new skills. Lapa Rios was honored with British Airways' Tourism for Tomorrow Award in 1995 and Harper's Hideaway Grand Award in 1996.
While you are at Lapa Rios:
All guided tours in the Lapa Rios Reserve help support ongoing maintenance and land acquisition. Choosing to hike and learn with a knowledgeable local guide gives the community continuing economic support and demonstrates that this diverse lowland tropical rain forest is more valuable left standing than one cut down. The tours meet at the front desk and do not require advance notice.
In this 1,000 acre reserve you will see all four species of Costa Rican monkeys: spider, white faced, squirrel and howlers. Other animals include agoutis, coati mundi, and possibly the fresh tracks of a jaguar, ocelot, marguay or mountain lion. You will catch sight of birds such as toucans, macaws, great curassow, crested guan, trogons, aracaris, honey creepers, herons, hummingbirds, tinamous, woodpeckers, wood creepers, ant birds, manikins, tanagers, caciques, euphonias, thrushes, hawks, and parrots. The black-checked ant tanager is unique to this part of the Osa Peninsula!
