Poas Volcano and Sarchi Oxcart Factory

The Poás Volcano is one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica due to its enormous geysers of sulfuric acid rain and its periodic emissions of ash. Lying 9045 feet above sea level, this volcano has one of the largest craters in the world: 1.6 km in diameter. One of its old craters is now the Botos Lagoon, named after the Botos Indians. The upper part of the volcano is enriched by dense cloud forest, and home to local species of birds and mammals.

Sarchi is famous for its hand painted oxcarts. Previous generations used the oxcarts as a means of transportation, and Sarchi was an important production center. Presently, Sarchi is known as an artisan craft center. On the way to Sarchi, we will stop in Grecia to see the only metallic church in Costa Rica, as well as its popular plaza. In Sarchi, we will visit the oxcart factories, where you can shop for souvenirs and items hand carved in beautiful woods.
